Denomination News:

In Memoriam    Rev. C. Hanko passed away early this afternoon, March 14, 2005.   He was 97 years old.  Probably many of you knew him personally and maybe had him as your pastor.  He was well known and well received in our  churches as a gentle, loving, wise leader.  He began his ministry in 1929 in Hull Iowa (I hear that he preached 3 years hearing hardly a good word about his sermons, and when he enquired about this from an elder, the elder said, "Dominee, if there is a problem, we'll let you know").   From there he went to Oak Lawn in Illinois in 1935.  Here the family lived, according to his son Prof. Herman Hanko, in a chicken coop that was modified into a home.  This was during the depression.  In 1945 he went to Manhattan in Montana.  In 1948 he
moved to First in
Grand Rapids where he served with Revs. Hoeksema and DeWolf.  He lived through the split there, and continued there until 1964 when he moved to Redlands.  In 1971 he came to Hudsonville, eventually retiring in 1977.  Now, 28 years later, and I believe 31 years after his wife passed away, the Lord has given him
deliverance.

Rev. S. Key declined the call from our congregation in Holland, MI.  Rev. J. Mahtani declined the call to our congregation in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  Rev. G. Eriks declined the call to our Bethel congregation in North Chicago, Il.

Classis West:  At the meeting of Classis West on March 2, Rev. Wayne Bekkering was granted emeritation.  God is thanked for the almost 33 years of faithful service in the active ministry.  Now he is commended to God’s wonderful and sufficient grace that he may continue to minister the Word in his life, and may the Lord fill every need in the days that are ahead.

Catechism:

Catechism this week: Beginners OT2 Review Chapters 10-11 at 6:00PM, Seniors OT Review Chapters 6-7 at 7:00 PM, and HC LD 4 at 6:30 PM. We will be using a new set of study notes to begin this review of the Heidelberg Catechism.  The adults are invited to attend the HC lessons.
From Missionary Mahtani:
“With joy and thanksgiving to God we announce that the Lord has provided us with our first volunteer assistant for
Pittsburgh.  Wesley Koops (former elder from First PRC of Holland) plans to be in Pittsburgh from March 21-April 11, 2005. In order to help carry out Council's decision to send a volunteer assistant to Pittsburgh for three weeks, twice a year, we will be taking up a collection at our evening service on March 27th.  In SW this will be in place of the collection for Christian Schools and in Pittsburgh this will be in place of the collection for the Building Fund.  Please note that the expected expense for each three-week visit is approximately $2,000.   Instead of using denominational funds, we would like to encourage free-will offerings from God’s people in the calling church, the mission field, and any others who might like to contribute to these labors. Let us not only give liberally, but let us continue in fervent prayer for eastern missions.”

Quote for Contemplation:  In light of this morning’s sermon, a few thoughts on Heaven:

The Heaven beyond death is Home.  It is not only rest or refuge; it is nothing less than Home.  And Home is more than a place of safety or of repose.  It is the scene where our whole being is in sweet and vivid harmony with surroundings.  To enter the unseen state, the Christian is not to totter out into the cold and void.  It is to “get Home.”  The Home will be indeed a circle of blessed fellowship, a place of inconceivable interchange of love and joy among its inhabitants.  But the supreme bliss of it which will always spring up through everything else, and be first in everything, is this—we shall have “got Home to the Lord”.  (Handley Moule, commenting on 2 Corinthians 5:6-9)
